In the active avoidance paradigm (AA), subjects learn to emit actions that escape threats and prevent harm. AA research stalled in the 1970s, partly because psychologists disagreed intensely over the reinforcement mechanisms and nature of avoidance responding (operant vs. respondent). However, recent work has shed new light on the distinction between AA and fear conditioning brain circuits. This session will detail this progress and discuss the role of AA in human anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.

ANXIOUS WITH JOSEPH LEDOUX + MARK EPSTEIN: In conversation with psychiatrist Mark Epstein, neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux tells us why in his latest book ANXIOUS: Using the Brain to Understand and Treat Fear and Anxiety.

Anxious the book and Anxious the CD are born today - July 14, 2015. The book offers a new view of fear, anxiety and other emotions, and how problems with fear anxiety can be more effectively treated. The CD explores some of the same psychological themes of the book, but through music. The book is published by Viking (Rick Kot, editor) and the CD was recorded at Cowboy Technical Services Recording Rig (Eric Ambel, producer, Mario Viele , engineer). Disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and phobia manifest in ways that are consistent with an uncontrollable state of fear. Their development involves heredity, previous sensitizing experiences, association of aversive events with previous neutral stimuli, and inability to inhibit or extinguish fear after it is chronic and disabling. I will highlight recent progress in fear learning and memory, differential genetic susceptibility to disorders of fear, and how these findings are being applied to the understanding, treatment and possible prevention of fear disorders. Promising advances are being translated from basic science to the clinic, including approaches to distinguish risk versus resilience before trauma exposure, methods to interfere with fear development during memory consolidation after a trauma, and techniques to enhance extinction of chronic fear. Cutting edge approaches to understand the genetic and epigenetic regulation at a cell-type specific level within amygdala circuitry as it relates to fear extinction will also be discussed. It is hoped that this new knowledge will translate to more successful, neuroscientifically informed and rationally designed approaches to disorders of threat/fear regulation.
