Stefano Soatto, from UCLA, will give an informal talk for this
week's group meeting. Abstract is below -- please note the
unusual time/day.
If you want to come and are not a regular attendee, please let Eero
know. If the rough head count seems likely to exceed 14, I'd
like to move the meeting to the CNS classroom (815).
DYNAMIC TEXTURES

Dynamic textures are sequences of images of moving scenes that
exhibit certain stationarity properties in time: these include
sea waves, smoke, foliage, whirlwind etc. We present a
characterization of dynamic textures that poses the problem of
modeling, learning, recognizing and synthesizing dynamic textures
within the general theory of system identification. For the
special case of second-order linear dynamic textures we present a
closed-form learning algorithm that can be employed to synthesize
novel textures with negligible computational cost. We show
examples of how very simple linear models can capture visually
complex phenomena.
