Welcome to the Workshop on Representation of Visual Scenes!

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in representation of visual scenes. In recent years, two clear trends have emerged in the area of multiple image analysis: image-to-image alignment based on motion- field models, and recovery of 3D geometry in terms of affine and projective invariants. Work in the first area has led to techniques for panoramic view construction based on multiple-image alignment and layered representations, whereas work in the second area has lead to techniques for the representation of scenes as collection of views and the recovery of a new view as combinations of a set of given views. Taken together, the new trends have led to new ways to formulate the traditional problems of structure-from-motion and 3D scene reconstruction.

In all, 36 papers were submitted to the workshop, of which 9 were selected for presentation. These papers belong to one of three topics: (i) layers and mosaics, (ii) invariants and uncalibrated imaging and (iii) structure from motion and stereo. In addition, three leading researchers, Prof. Edward Adelson, Prof. Olivier Faugeras, and Prof. Takeo Kanade, were invited to give presentations on each of these topics. The proceedings of the workshop will be published by the IEEE Computer Society, and will be mailed to participants within a few months.

As of the start of ICCV95, over 100 people have registered for the workshop. We believe that this indicates a strong interest in the topics of the workshop within the computer vision research community. It is our sincere hope that each participant in the workshop will be inspired to continue work on these topics.

Our special thanks go to Eric Grimson, the General Chair of ICCV, and Linda Shapiro, the Chair of the IEEE PAMI Technical Committee for their support in making this workshop a reality, and to all the members of the program committee for reviewing the papers. Last but not least, our sincerest thanks to Gayle Fitzgerald of MIT for handling the local arrangements, and to the ever-so- efficient Joyce Morris of Sarnoff for providing the organizational support on our end.
