Abstract (not part of the original publication):
We construct a wavelet image coder based on the filter pair [1 2 1]
and [-1 2 -1], and their (approximate) inverses. The use of these
simple filters makes the transform (or inverse transform) extremely
efficient, and thus useful for applications that involve asymmetric
computational resources. A standard example is a centralized image
database, in which the encoder need not be particularly efficient, but
the decoder must be implemented on millions of platforms of low
computational power. The opposite is true on a remote space
exploration probe, in which limited computational resources require a
very simple encoding algorithm, but the ground station can use a more
computationally expensive decoding scheme.
