Summer Research Program


Applying to SURP

  • Applicant must be US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Applicant should have strong academic records with courses in biology, mathematics, psychology, and if possible, neuroscience, and a GPA of 3.0.
  • Priority will be given to students with minority cultural, racial or ethnic background or with demonstrable financial need (check the poverty threshold table) or of the first generation to attend college.
  • Priority will also be given to pre-PhDs.
  • Applicants must be undergraduates completing their sophomore or junior year and with at least one course completed in the field of neuroscience.
  • Applicants from any institution will be considered. Priority will be given to students from small colleges with limited research opportunities.
  • This program requires full-time participation and is not compatible with enrollments in courses.

Application instructions

Applying to SURP is a multi-step process:
  1. First, complete the online application form by CLICKING HERE.
  2. Email the following materials in ONE pdf file: (your CV/resume, unofficial transcript, and a personal statement) to surpinfo@cns.nyu.edu. Subject line should be "SURP_Year_last name_first name". For example, SURP_2018_Smith_John.
  3. Ask two faculty members to send recommendations to surpinfo@cns.nyu.edu. The subject line should also include "SURP_Year_last name_first name".

All application materials will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting February 15. Application deadline is March 15. Please do not contact the department regarding the status of your application. We will contact students directly if application materials are missing. Students accepted into the program will be notified by May 1.

Students accepted to SURP must attend entire duration of the 10 week program.
