visual illusions

static motion with contrast modulation

static motion

we modified the rotating snake illusion (by kitaoka) by adding different contrasts levels in order to emulate contrast induced bias' of visual motion perception. click the image to see a larger version of this illusion. it should work pretty well. similarly, we modified the original ouchi illusion (by japanese artist hajime ouchi) with different contrast patches, which finally ended up on the Nature Neuroscience cover.

contrast induced bias in speed perception

the following link lets you download a video clip that demonstrates the effect of contrast on perceived motion:

video (1.8 mb)

center your gaze in between the two apertures on the left and right. although the higher contrast grating appears to move faster, it is actually the low contrast grating that has a (slightly) higher physical speed.
