The goal of my lab is to understand how the
structures of the medial temporal lobe allow
us to form and retain new long-term memories
for facts and events, termed declarative memory
in humans and relational memory in animals.
To address this question we probe the patterns
of neural activity of individual and small groups
of neurons in the medial temporal lobe as animals
are engaged in various memory demanding tasks.
Most recently we have focused on the patterns
of dynamic neural activity that accompany the
earliest stages of associative learning. We have
alsoexamined the representation of very
well-learned information in the medial temporal
lobe. Future studies will be directed at understanding
the consolidation process
whereby the newly formed memories
gradually become independent of the
medial temporal lobe.
